NEW: Student apartment complexes coming to ASU
Reading time: 2 minutes
Two new student apartment complexes are coming to Alabama State University’s campus. The Board of Trustees approved the plans this week, bringing over 500 extra beds to campus.
Keep reading for everything we know about the complexes.
Apartment living on campus
The recently approved student housing complexes are two different apartment-style complexes, which will be on campus at ASU.
“We want to ensure that we give our students the optimum opportunities which modern living facilities provide them.”
Donald Dotson, ASU Vice President of Facilities Management and Operations.
One complex is planned for an empty lot on Forest Drive and will add 288 beds. This location will also have a student activity center and cafè.
Another 264-bed complex is planned for South University Drive. To build these units, the Cynthia Alexander Apartments at the same location will be demolished.
Construction on both complexes will run concurrently, so both can open around the same time.
Important for ASU’s growth
A release from earlier this month says ASU’s student body grew over 12% from this time last year. As that growth continues, these apartments will only help prospective students find another reason to become a Hornet.
“This announcement has been a long time coming. We have not had new construction on the ASU campus for a number of years, and to have two new apartment complexes coming to the campus within the next couple of years is certainly exciting news.”
Dr. Quinton T. Ross, Jr., ASU President
The apartment construction slots nicely into the school’s FOCUS 2030 Strategic Plan, a comprehensive project to thrust ASU onto the national stage as a leader in HBCU excellence.
