If you know you know… Wawa coming to Alabama is a big deal. With a following comparable to the mega-popular Buc-ee’s rest stops, Wawa is a food market + gas station with quite the fan base. Its first Alabama location just broke ground in Fairhope on June 13, with five more on the way to our state soon. Read on for details.

Wawa currently operates in six states and Washington DC, and now it’s making its way to sweet home Alabama. We previously announced our excitement for Wawa coming to the state, and now we’re one step closer to trying it for ourselves.

With a large selection of fresh food like custom prepared hoagies, freshly-brewed coffee and hot breakfast sandwiches, Wawa is more than your average road trip stop.

At a groundbreaking ceremony on June 13, Wawa hosted more than 25 VIP customers, as well as local officials and partners. Of course, mascot Wally Goose was also in attendance.

Attendees were able to participate in the groundbreaking, and they also received an update on Wawa’s growth plans for the market, including the next Wawa set to go under construction this year in Cottage Hill Road & Sollie Road in Mobile. The groundbreaking ceremony for that location is slated for October of this year.

The Fairhope location is projected to open in the second quarter of 2024.

In addition to the groundbreaking, ceremony attendees got to hear about the Wawa story, its unique offer, community partnerships and support for local organizations. Guests got a taste of what’s to come with samples of freshly brewed coffee and other handcrafted beverages.

Additionally, Wawa presented a $2,500 grant to Prodisee Pantry, enabling them to purchase kid-friendly foods including peanut butter & jelly, apple sauce, granola bars and more for a program with the local library teaching kids how to cook healthy foods.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to break ground on our first store and celebrate with our newest soon-to-be neighbors! We are thrilled to be kicking off our expansion into Alabama and can’t wait to open our doors!”

Steve Hasher, Director of Store Operations for Wawa
