You may already be getting sick of the cold through the first couple of weeks in December but those temperatures have arrived in Alabama a little later than normal.

The month of November actually set new records because of its relatively unusual heat in Alabama.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), our state just experienced the warmest November to ever be recorded.

Keep reading for more details + which areas of the state had to deal with the most heat.

It may not have felt very warm for most of November. In fact, I’d argue it felt great outside most days but that’s because I’m a fan of temperatures in the low 60s.

According to a report from the NOAA, the average temperature in Alabama last month was 61.6 degrees Fahrenheit. That is more than 8 degrees higher from November’s average temperature in the state during the 20th century.

“We’re definitely in a warm pattern across the state of Alabama… and it has some impacts economically, in terms of cost of heating and cooling, particularly summertime folks are being impacted by that, and that’s something we’ll you know in the Weather Service, from a climate perspective, we continue to monitor and it has other impacts as well too.”

~ Chris Darden, Meteorologist in Charge at National Weather Service in Birmingham

The report also says the 24-month span from December 2022 through November 2024 was the second warmest ever recorded in Alabama.

The warmth was not just focused in on Alabama as the NOAA reports record-high average temperatures in November for:

  • Louisiana
  • Maine
  • Mississippi

Overall, November 2024 ranks as the sixth warmest November on record for the country.

With just one month left in 2024, the year-to-date (YTD) average temperature was 57.1 degrees — 3.3 degrees above average — ranking as the nation’s warmest such YTD on record. 22 states had their warmest January–November on record.

The most impacted metro area in November appears to be the City of Mobile as it continues to set new records for warmth.

2023 was the warmest year on record for the city but 2024 could break it depending on the temperatures in December. The last five years is the hottest 60-month span ever recorded in Mobile.
