NOW OPEN: US-98 at Mississippi state line
Reading time: 2 minutes
One of the longest highways east of the Mississippi River has a new connection. The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) says a connection from SR-158 to US-98 in Mississippi is now open to traffic. We’ll tell you the details of that and a few more projects ALDOT has in the works.
US-98 + SR-158
Folks have been asking for years, if not decades, for a way to connect I-65 in Mobile to the Mississippi State Line. That’s where SR-158 comes into play.
It was completed in October of last year and stretches from I-65 to the state line, where it meets US-98. The final step of this new highway project was to connect it to 98. That’s what just opened.
ALDOT does note that the work isn’t finished yet, so you might see some lane closures as they finish everything up.
What else ALDOT is working on
ALDOT is also looking at widening interstates in Mobile County.
In the works right now is a $24.8M project to widen I-10 between March and McDonald Roads. Five miles of the 4-lane interstate will be expanded to six lanes, creating capacity for another 65,000 cars daily. This project is expected to wrap up this summer.
Another proposed project would create a 6-lane stretch of I-65 in the Saraland area. That project would also require widening the I-65 bridges that run over SR-158.
