Southside, Alabama, is getting a little more caffeinated.

Volt Coffee, a new Gadsden-area coffee shop, is celebrating their grand opening this weekend, and we’ve got the scoop (or, in this case, the brew).

Volt Coffee’s physical location has been a long time coming

Volt Coffee may be celebrating their opening this weekend, but their story beings much earlier. Logan and Shelby Owens, the husband-and-wife duo behind the shop, started their small-batch coffee roasting company in 2021.

The Owens did pop-ups and participated in markets in the Gadsden area, using the simple tagline, “Drink good coffee,” with their lightning bolt logo.

After gaining more experience—and more passion—for high-quality coffee, the Owens decided to take their adventure to the next level. They started working on a permanent Volt Coffee location in Southside near Gadsden, an area that Owens is very familiar with.

“It’s awesome to be able to, like, start something like this in a place like this that’s my home and kind of has been for a long time.”

Logan Owens, in an interview with ShopGadsden

In his interview with ShopGadsden, Logan Owens described the process of Volt’s new storefront taking shape. They got to have input from the very beginning of the build, adding on features like a drive-thru.

They still have more planned for Volt, though, like a back patio space, awning and outdoor lights—making Volt even more of a community spot—something that Owens truly cares about.

“You learn to lean into the community, and then you give back to the community because they’ve helped you to get where you are.”

Coffee is more than just a drink for Owens, it’s a passion. He loves bringing high-quality coffee to the locals around Gadsden.

“I love doing this…because I get to meet with people and show them that I’ve been passionate about for so long… They catch on to it and they’re like, ‘Wow, I didn’t realize there was this much that went into coffee.'”

A lot goes into everything they make at Volt Coffee, actually. They mix their own cream cheeses, brew their teas in-house and bake their own pastries.

One such pastry is their homemade “pop tart.” These delicious renditions of the nostalgic breakfast treat often sell out at Volt.

Here are some of the other menu items that we have our eye on:

  • Classics done right, like the cappuccino, cortado and Cuban
  • Latte flavors like the Honey Lavender
  • Bacon, egg + cheese bagel
  • Sausage kolache
  • Bacon cheddar scone

Volt had their soft opening in mid-June, but their grand opening is this weekend. They’re celebrating with free drip coffee, local business giveaways, pastry specials (they’ve hinted at a s’mores-themed treat) and the announcement of their extended hours.
