Alabama Audubon is enlisting volunteer citizen scientists across the state to help tackle one of the leading causes of bird deaths — window collisions.

According to Audubon, window collisions are recognized as the second leading cause of bird deaths in North America with nearly half occurring at residential windows. The remaining deaths take place in cities with larger buildings covered in glass and bright lights.

Project Safe Flight – Volunteer today

Since 2019, the group has gathered bird collision data in Birmingham and cities across Alabama through its Project Safe Flight initiative.

Volunteers can join the project by emailing Dr. Lianne Koczur, Alabama Audubon’s Science & Conservation Director at lianne@alaudubon.org

Its next volunteer training is Tuesday, August 19 (email Lianne for ZOOM info: details).

“Project Safe Flight is an easy way to help make a big difference for Alabama’s birds. Our volunteers are helping us figure out where window collisions are a big problem, so we can go to those building owners and try to work with them to make the windows bird-safe.”
