Red Clay Brewing Company in Opelika is set to reopen after announcing earlier this year it would close its doors.

In January, we reported that Red Clay Brewing Company would be closing in March, ending more than a decade of serving the Opelika community.

And while the brewery is currently closed, but a new owner is bringing it back with plans to reopen the taproom this month.

A familiar face takes ownership

Local beer enthusiast + former team member of two years, Chris Hutchison has officially purchased the brewery.

Hutchison previously worked part time behind the bar at Red Clay Brewing for more than two years, often helping during events or busy weekends. During that time, he developed a strong connection to the space and the people who gathered there.

“I fell in love with the place,” Hutchison said. “My family would come here and hang out, and I always loved the atmosphere of a brewery.”

Hutchison said his appreciation for both the brewery and the Opelika community ultimately led him to step in and purchase the business when the opportunity arose.

“I didn’t want to see something else come into this space,” Hutchison said. “Red Clay has been a staple in the community and I want to keep that going.”

A community-focused vision

Founded 11 years ago, Red Clay Brewing has built a loyal following through its craft beer lineup, food offerings and community-centered taproom.

Hutchison said he plans to keep the elements that made the brewery successful while creating an even more welcoming environment for families, friends and neighbors.

His vision includes adding more lounge-style seating, creating a kid-friendly corner and encouraging more community gatherings at the brewery.

“I want it to feel like a homey place where people can gather,” Hutchison said. “Some people may not even drink beer, but they still want a place to come hang out and support the community.”

Hutchison also plans to expand the menu, bring back community favorites like trivia nights and explore partnerships with other local businesses and organizations.

The brewery will continue working with longtime brew master Kraig Collins, who has been with Red Clay Brewing since it first opened 11 years ago.
