Regions Bank won approval from the Alabama State Banking Department in July to expand its Portable Branch Facility in Tuscaloosa.

You are probably asking: What exactly is a Portable Branch Facility, and why should Tuscaloosa care?

Essentially a Portable Branch Facility is a full service bank branch on wheels. It does everything a traditional bank branch would do, except it is not a stationary building.

First traveling bank branch opened as a result of Hurricane Katrina

The first Regions Bank Portable Branch Facility was deployed 20 years ago when it was used as a banking “first responder” to provide services along the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina.

The latest version that will serve Tuscaloosa County premiered in 2019.

Today, the traveling bank branch continues to support storm and flood victims, and now thanks to its recent approval from the Alabama Banking Department, Regions is ready to expand and serve potentially 60,000+ students, faculty and staff at the University of Alabama, Stillman College and Shelton State Community College.

In the future, the mobile bank could be a welcomed sight for crowds attending Crimson Tide football games, sporting events, concerts and graduations held throughout the year around Tuscaloosa.

In the coming years, don’t be surprised to see more bank branches on wheels.
