A Dream in the Making

Originally from Germany, Rolf Meyer moved to the Tuscaloosa area in 2013 to work at the Mercedes-Benz U.S International Plant. However, he decided to eventually pursue his lifelong dream of opening a deli instead.

That dream started rolling in 2019 when he launched a German food truck that quickly built a loyal following. Once demand grew, he opened his first brick-and-mortar deli location in Northport. Eventually, he moved his business to Tuscaloosa to reach even more hungry customers and increase foot traffic.

Today, the deli is a beloved spot for fresh German cuisine located in Temerson Square downtown.

Food

Rolf’s menu is packed with traditional German dishes, including:

  • Schnitzel
  • Goulash
  • Pretzels
  • Waffles
  • Sausages
  • Chicken Döner Platter
  • German Meatloaf

The deli also features a bar stocked with European wines and beers to complete the experience.

On a recent visit, we tried the bratwurst, which was served with a side of cottage potatoes and sauerkraut. Everything was made in-house and tasted delicious, fresh and authentic.

Chef Rolf himself even stopped by our table to check in and share how he personally prepared the dish. The little touches and attention to detail made dining here a special experience.

Events

Regulars know that Rolf’s isn’t just about the food—it’s also about community. The deli hosts monthly food tastings, open mic nights and even stein hoisting contests, a Bavarian test of strength that’s just as fun to watch as it is to compete.

Chef Rolf is also known to serenade guests on his accordion from time to time, which fills the restaurant with German music and makes everyone feel like part of the family.

On July 12, Rolf’s Deli & Sausages is hosting a Sign Hanging Party with activities including pretzel and bratwurst eating contests, an autograph hour with UA athletes and a raffle. The event will take place from 4PM-9PM.

The deli’s motto, “Come as a guest, leave as a friend,” is more than just a slogan. It’s a promise that Chef Rolf and his staff delivers on every day.
