Reading time: 2 minutes

Community leaders from around the Shoals gathered in Leighton last week to break ground on the town’s latest revitalization effort.
The $1 million project will officially connect the historic district to the Singing River Trail, a 200-mile greenway project that was established in 2018 and stretches across the region.
The addition in Leighton is a multiuse path + will reimagine part of downtown to help drive economic activity and tourism. It’s funded by a Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) grant.
Downtown Leighton
The community held its celebration over the weekend during Sledgefest.
Once work in the downtown district is completed, the Singing River Trail hopes to highlight the town’s artwork and history.
Existing parallel parking spots will be repurposed to space for pedestrians. The project will add:
- Crosswalks
- Painting murals
- Raised planters
- Hanging string lights
The city hopes these changes will create a vibrant, public space that can be used for annual events and improve day-to-day circulation.
Singing River Trail
In 2018, the Land Use Committee of Launch 2035 developed the Singing River Trail Master Plan over the course of a 15-month period. It also established the Western Route Master Plan which links Decatur to the Shoals and the Florence area.
The goal of the Singing River Trail is to strengthen regional bonds, and create new health and wellness, educational, economic, tourism, and entrepreneurial opportunities for the people and communities of North Alabama.
