Smithsonian exhibit opens in Sylacauga, first of six stops across Alabama

A new Smithsonian exhibit is on display at the Isabel Anderson Comer Museum and Arts Center in Sylacauga.

The Alabama Humanities Alliance is partnering with six different locations throughout the state over the next nine months to showcase its “Spark! Places of Innovation” exhibit. The schedule includes stops in:

  • Sylacauga: June 20-July 19 | Isabel Anderson Comer Museum and Arts Center
  • Dothan: Aug. 1-31 | Landmark Park
  • Brewton: Sep. 23-Oct. 23 | Brewton City Hall
  • Uniontown: Nov. 11-Dec. 13 | Renaissance Center
  • Athens: Jan. 3-Feb. 10 | Athens-Limestone County Public Library
  • Fort Payne: Feb. 20-March 25 | Fort Payne Coal & Iron Building

Spark! Places of Innovation

This Smithsonian exhibit uses photographs, digital stories and other interactive elements to explore historic people + places that have ignited innovation and invention in rural communities across the country.

it comes to our state in hopes of providing a springboard for diverse local programming while spotlighting the stories and ideas of Alabamians.

Each stop during the tour will provide a more specific look at a piece of innovation in the area including:

  • Avondale Mills
  • George Washington Carver
  • Evolution of farming technology
  • Uniontown Cotton Oil Company
  • Manufacturing technology
  • Discovery of coal + iron
