Josie and Mitchell Robinson fueled their passion project ‘Somnia’ with the Mobile community.

The Robinsons both grew up and met in the Mobile area. This is home to them, so they wanted to keep the movie’s filming exclusive to Mobile and Baldwin counties, finding local actors + crew to use in the production.

Now, they are even premiering the movie in downtown Mobile. Here are all the details on the film’s debut:

  • Where: Crescent Theater, 208 Dauphin St, Mobile, AL, 36602
  • When: Friday, Mar. 20, 6PM + 8PM

The process of filming

Not knowing what to expect, Josie reached out to a connection she had with a local theater group in hopes of finding actors, and within a few days, she had 10 people waiting to audition. This quickly snowballed as businesses and friends poured their time into this movie.

Mobile businesses were also quick to offer their spaces to the film. You will notice a few local businesses featured in the film, like:

  • Soul Caffeine (Mobile)
  • Slurp Society

Drama and plot twists

Restless nights quickly turn into hypersomnia in Josie and Mitchell Robinson’s ‘Somnia.’ The story follows Jenny as she copes with loss, new struggles, and all the things she should have said.

Without giving too much away, Josie shared that this film can be classified as a drama that explores deep thought processes and their effects on relationships. If you enjoy plot twists, you won’t want to miss it.

Dreaming Big, Filming Small

We were working with a dream and some spare change.

Josie Robinson, director

The crew was full of friends and family, working tirelessly from early July to early September, only on weekends and the occasional weeknight. Mitchell’s phone captured all the magic; Josie said they were heavily inspired by other indie films that have been shot using phone cameras. There is no need for a big budget when you have this much dedication and support from your community.

If you want to support the city that you live in, take a chance on something small
