South Alabama assistant named to national 30 under 30 list

As both a player and a coach, Tre Williams has made a name for himself around the state.

Now, he’s getting some national recognition.

Williams, who is now the special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach for South Alabama, was recently named to 247Sports annual 30 Under 30 list that recognizes the up-and-coming college football coaches across the country.

Williams has made several stops across the state during his career as a player and as a coach. His connections include:

  • St. Paul’s Episcopal School
    • Under Armour All-American (2014)
    • Shot put state champion (2013)
    • 5A Basketball Player of the Year (2014)
  • Auburn University
    • 47 games (2014-17)
    • Team captain (2017)
  • Thompson High School
    • Linebackers coach
    • 2020 state champion

He joined the South Alabama staff in 2023 after stops Arkansas-Monticello and UCF.

In 2024, Williams mentored kicker Laith Marjan who made 16-of-17 field goal attempts in 2024 with a long of 49 yards. Marjan also knocked through 42 extra points during the season and handled South Alabama’s kickoff duties. For his efforts, Marjan was a Lou Groza Award Semifinalist and received All-Sun Belt Conference Second Team honors.

In his first season on the defensive side of the ball, Williams coached the linebacker duo of Courtney McBride Jr. and Aakil Washington, who each finished the year with 39 tackles. McBride led the team in tackles for loss and sacks in 2024 with 10.5 and 5.0, respectively.

Each year, 247Sports attempts to identify the next wave of up-and-coming assistant coaches and staffers in college football.

The initial 2017 list included several future head coaches (Kenny Dillingham, Arizona State; Scotty Walden, UTEP; Jeff Faris, Austin Peay), a few powerhouse coordinators (Glenn Schumann, Georgia; Tino Sunseri, UCLA; Nick Sheridan, Alabama, Collin Klein, Texas A&M), an SEC general manager (Jacob LaFrance, Florida) and even an athletic director (Fernando Lovo, New Mexico).
