Travelers across Alabama should get a little bit of relief this weekend.

The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) has announced it will suspend all temporary lane closures on Alabama interstates between July 3 at 6AM to July 5 at 11:59PM.

Roadways are expected to have an increase of cars throughout the holiday weekend + ALDOT is hoping to reduce traffic congestion.

“During the 2024 Fourth of July holiday, 11 people died in crashes in the state of Alabama. That number of deaths was the second highest holiday the entire year, only behind the Thanksgiving holiday. By suspending temporary lane closures, our goal is to keep traffic moving and get everyone to their destinations.”

ALDOT Holiday Travel Tips

  • Avoid Distractions: Drivers should keep their eyes and minds on the road and avoid cell phone use while driving.
  • Observe Speed Limits: Speeding is the number one contributor to fatal crashes in Alabama. It reduces reaction time and increases the severity of crashes.
  • Buckle Up: Seat belts save lives and reduce the risk of serious injury in the event of a crash. Ensure that everyone in the vehicle is wearing a seat belt properly.
