When you think of the most historic rivalries in high school football, Moody-Leeds may not be the first to come to mind.

The two teams have only met 16 previous times and it’s been pretty one-sided but in recent seasons, both teams have been a force in Class 5A. Their combined success has made this game a must-watch over the last two seasons.

Here’s what you need to know ahead of this week’s matchup:

  • Who: #7 Leeds at #6 Moody
  • Where: Bill Morris Stadium, 714 High School Dr, Moody, AL 35004
  • When: 7PM, Friday, Oct. 11
  • Tickets: $10

Leeds is officially 14-2 in the series with one of those losses coming by forfeit but Moody has come close, losing by a combined four points in the last two seasons.

Keep reading to learn more about both teams + check out some of the other big games happening this week.

Leeds Greenwave

Leeds not only has dominated this series, it also has a more successful history as a football program. The Greenwave now has 45 wins over the last five seasons, winning at least one playoff game every year since 2020.

The program has also racked up four state championships and seven region titles in the last two decades.

This year’s team won its first five games before dropping a non-region matchup with previously winless Briarwood. The team got to as high as #4 in the Alabama Sports Writers Association (ASWA) 5A rankings.

Leeds then bounced back with another big region win and it’s been the offense leading the way.

The Greenwave is averaging over 38 points per game this season including 45.5 points in region play. Both of those marks would be the program’s highest since 2015—its last state title.

Moody Blue Devils

Moody surged on to the scene in Class 5A after the hiring of Jake Ganus, a former Chelsea and UAB star. In three seasons with Ganus, the Blue Devils have:

  • 24-7 overall record
  • 3 playoff wins
  • First quarterfinal appearance since 2004

Now, Ganus and Moody are hoping for more. The program is still searching for its first region title in two decades and this meeting with Leeds is the only thing that has gotten in the way of that goal the last two seasons.

The Blue Devils have won four straight games after opening the season with a loss to an out-of-state opponent and a 3-point loss to 6A #5 Oxford.
