The Bama Buzz Game of the Week: Gordo hosting Bibb County highlights loaded Week 1 slate

We had some incredible matchups in Week 0, the first week of the high school football season, which was capped off by a must-see thrilling finish in Ohatchee.

Now, the state officially moves into Week 1 (yes, I know it’s confusing) and we may be in store for an even better set of games.

It was tough to focus on just one for our Game of the Week but a ranked showdown in west Alabama gets the nod. Here’s what you need to know:

Bibb County Choctaws (1-0)

Bibb County is set to cap off the most successful decade in its program history. The team has averaged nine wins per season over the last nine years, making the postseason every season since coach Matt Geohagan took over the program.

Expectations are high again this season, especially after a win over 6A Chilton County in the season opener. It was the program’s 600th all-time victory.

Bibb County is now ranked #2 in Class 4A, receiving six first-place votes to sit behind Jackson.

This will be the third straight season the two teams have met with Bibb County winning each of the last two. The Choctaws now lead the all-time series 12-10-1.

Gordo Green Wave

This is another program in the midst of a historic run, winning at least nine games in each of the last 10 seasons. During that decade, Gordo has registered:

• 113 wins
• 8 region titles
• 1 Super 7 appearance
• 7 quarterfinal appearances

Gordo is in the large group of teams hoping to chase down Fyffe in 3A this season. The team got off to a great start, defeating Fayette County 62-12 but the Green Wave still dropped to #5 in the ASWA rankings.

The Green Wave has not defeated Bibb County since 1974, when the two teams met more regularly.

There are plenty of ranked matchups on the slate this week. Week 1 serves as the final week before region play begins for most teams in the state as coaches look to make their final adjustments to prepare for the gauntlet.
