Get ready to applaud, because five Alabama schools have been recognized as National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2021.

What is a National Blue Ribbon School?

They are schools recognized by the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program, which honors outstanding public and nonpublic schools that represent the full diversity of American Schools.

Now in its 39th year, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has honored approximately 10,000 awards to over 9,000 schools.

To be nominated as a National Blue Ribbon School, the Education Department recognizes all schools in one of two performance categories, based on all student scores, subgroup student scores and graduation rates:

  • Exemplary High Performing Schools are among their state’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.
  • Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools are among their state’s highest performing schools in closing achievement gaps between a school’s student groups and all students.

Principals and teacher leaders are also called on to give presentations at state, regional and professional meetings about practices that have made a difference for their students and faculty.
