Troy University Chancellor Jack Hawkins retiring in 2025 after more than 35 years of service

Troy University Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr announced on Tuesday he will step down as Chancellor on October 1, 2025, after leading the school for more than 35 years.

Dr. Hawkins is currently one of the longest-serving chief executives at a major public university in the U.S.

Troy University Chancellor since 1989

A native of Mobile, Dr. Hawkins was named Chancellor of the Troy State University System on Sept. 1, 1989. 

Since taking the reigns at Troy, more than $375 million has been invested in capital improvements by the Hawkins Administration, including new academic buildings on all four of Troy’s Alabama campuses. 

Additional accomplishments include:

  • University’s evolution into an international institution, attracting record numbers of students from other nations and establishing teaching sites around the world
  • Academic standards for admission have been increased
  • New degree programs were established in all academic colleges
  • Athletics programs joined the highest level of NCAA competition
  • Re-classification of the university to doctoral degree status

Once he retires as Chancellor in 2025, Dr. Hawkins will continue to serve as Chancellor Emeritus, supporting the Board of Trustees and his successor.
