Tuscaloosa’s Alberta Park to be renamed Kip Tyner Plaza

The City of Tuscaloosa will rename Alberta Park to Kip Tyner Plaza and a section of 26th Avenue East will be renamed Kip Tyner Parkway in honor of the late City Council President.

Tuscaloosa mayor Walt Maddox announced the honorary name changes Monday night during a Celebration of Life and Service honoring Tyner. The longtime city council member passed away at age 70 on Friday, Sept. 18. 

“Kip’s heart and soul is in this park. I know we will all miss our friend dearly, but we will continue to tell Mr. Tyner’s stories of service and remember how much better he made Alberta.”

The plaza is located at 2710 University Blvd E. It’s open from 6AM until one hour after sunset.

Kip Tyner’s career in Tuscaloosa

Tyner was first elected as District 5 City Councilor in 1997 and went on to serve seven consecutive terms on the City Council including two as Council President.

Throughout his tenure, Tyner made significant contributions to the development of Alberta, spearheading projects such as:

• Tuscaloosa Tennis Center
• Recruitment of SWJ Technology
• University Boulevard East Improvements Project

Tyner was a Tuscaloosa native and a graduate of Tuscaloosa High School and the University of Alabama, where he earned a degree in Journalism.

He was also a lifelong advocate for animal welfare, including serving as Chair of the Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter Advisory Committee.
