They say patience is a virtue. And it’s seemingly a more and more rare virtue in college sports.

But former 5-star recruit Ty Simpson spent three seasons on the bench in Tuscaloosa, playing a backup role through two coaching staffs without entering the transfer portal.

Now, Simpson will be getting his chance at the helm of the offense.

As expected, Simpson has been named the starting quarterback for the Crimson Tide, according to a report from ESPN. He led the battle throughout the season and eventually beat out freshman Keelon Russell and transfer Austin Mack.

Keep reading to learn more about Simpson’s career up to this point + what Alabama fans can expect from their new quarterback.

Ty Simpson

Before arriving in Tuscaloosa, Simpson had a stellar high school career including being name the Tennessee Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior. He accounted for 52 total touchdowns and led Westview to the state title.

Simpson was a 5-star recruit + was ranked the No. 27 overall recruit in the Class of 2022. He was the second ranked dual-threat quarterback in the class.

During his first three seasons with Alabama, Simpson has played in 16 games and accounted for:

  • 29-of-50 passing
  • 381 passing yards
  • 130 rushing yards
  • 3 TDs (all rushing)

Simpson’s most notable performance so far was against South Florida in 2024 when he came off the bench. He led the Tide to all three of its scoring drives in that game, resulting in a 17-3 victory.

First-year starters at Alabama

The Ty Simpson era will officially get started on Aug. 30 when the Tide travels to Tallahassee to face Florida State in Week 1.

It’s a pretty good situation for Simpson to be walking into with leading receivers Ryan Williams and Germie Bernard in support along with Jam Miller returning in the backfield.

First-year starting quarterbacks have had plenty of success at Alabama in recent years including:

  • Jalen Milroe: 35 total TDs, 6th in Heisman voting, 12-2 record, SEC Champions, CFP appearance
  • Bryce Young: 50 total TDs, Heisman winner, 13-2 record, SEC Champions, National Championship Game appearance
  • Mac Jones: 42 total TDs, 3rd in Heisman voting, 13-0 record, SEC Champions, National Champions
  • Tua Tagovailoa: 48 total TDs, 2nd in Heisman voting, 14-1 record, SEC Champions, National Championship Game appearance
  • Jalen Hurts: 36 total TDs, 14-1 record, SEC Champions, National Championship Game appearance

The last six first-year starting quarterbacks led the Crimson Tide to victories in the SEC Championship Game and all of them made it to the College Football Playoff in year one.
