Last month, the Little River Canyon Center was on the list of National Park Service (NPS) programs set to be cut at the end of the year. But seven weeks later, it seems the center has been made safe from those cuts.

According to a statement from Jacksonville State University President Don Killingsworth, NPS will continue its operations beyond 2025.

“This exciting news is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our federal delegation and state and local partners. We are grateful for their commitment to preserving this vital resource for education, conservation, and outdoor recreation… Together, we will build on our shared mission to provide meaningful programming, research opportunities, and public engagement that highlight Little River Canyon’s unique natural and cultural heritage.”

Don Killingsworth, Jax State President

Killingsworth said the university will continue to manage and maintain the Canyon Center.

The Little River Canyon Center is a JSU facility, adjoining the Little River Canyon National Preserve in Fort Payne. The center features:

  • Grand Hall
  • HD movie theater
  • Gift shop
  • Natural history library
  • Exhibits
  • Classrooms
  • Outdoor amphitheate
  • Scenic trails
