New signage has been installed across the University of West Alabama’s trail system.

The unveiling was held earlier this week as part of the Year of Alabama Trails initiative in conjunction with the Alabama Trails Foundation and the Alabama Tourism Department.

The new signage will improve the experience for students, faculty, staff, and community members utilizing UWA’s network of walking, running, and nature trails.

“We are thrilled to officially unveil our new trail signage with detailed maps. The trails have been a long-term project for our campus and a testament to the natural beauty that surrounds us. These trails are a vital asset for our university community, promoting health, wellness, and a deeper appreciation for our environment. We are grateful for the support of the Alabama Trails Foundation and the Alabama Tourism Department in helping to create these maps as part of the ‘Year of Trails.’”

The new signage helps highlight all the trails found on campus with the goal of making it easier for casual users to find their way along the interconnected paths.

One of the major highlights of the campus trail system is the Blackland Prairie Restoration Project, a 17-acre endeavor led by UWA to restore a former pasture native prairie habitat.

More than three miles of trails help visitors explore the return of this native grassland community while providing access to viewing a rich diversity of butterflies, birds, and flowers.

The university says these trails are a vital part of the overall work being done in restoring parts of Alabama’s lost prairies. The interconnected trails system offers opportunities to explore campus without using a car + slip away for a few minutes from college life.
