The group of monks on a pilgrimage from Fort Worth, Texas to Washington, D.C. have reached Alabama’s capital city and have a whole day of events ahead of them.

Here’s everything you need to know.

About the Walk for Peace

Monks Walking Along A Road.

The Sangha (a.k.a. the Buddhist community of monks) from the Huong Dao Vipassana Bhavana Center began their journey in late October. The walk is set to take about 120 days and last 2,300 miles.

The monks’ mission is “to promote national healing, unity and compassion,” according to a statement at the beginning of their walk.

“Rooted in both spiritual devotion and civic purpose, the Walk for Peace seeks to remind Americans that peace is not a destination — it is a practice.

“As the nation faces challenges of division, mental health crises and conflict both at home and abroad, this pilgrimage offers a simple yet profound message: Peace begins within the heart of each person and extends outward to families, communities and the nation as a whole.”

Their entry into Alabama on Monday, Dec. 15 represents an approximate midpoint for the monks — they reached the town of Cuba on the 51st day after traveling more than 1,000 miles.

The monks have stopped along their route at state capitols, landmarks, schools, police and fire departments, churches and more for meals, a place to sleep and to educate the community about their mission.

Aloka, a.k.a. “The Peace Dog” has also been on this journey with the monks, bringing smiles and warmth to every person he meets.

During the trip, the Sangha has:

  • Eaten one meal a day
  • Slept outdoors beneath trees
  • Followed monastic customs meant to cultivate discipline + mindfulness
  • Spread their message of hope, compassion, loving-kindness, harmony + love

Walking pilgrimages are central to Buddhist tradition, according to Buddhistdoor Global, an online Buddhist news journal.
