There is plenty of history behind one of the latest houses listed on the market in Elmore County. The house is perched on a hill overlooking downtown Wetumpka and it has become accustomed to being in front of a camera, whether that’s the camera of big filmmakers or just tourists moving through the central Alabama.

The Big Fish House, as it is more commonly known, has officially been listed for sale with a $899,000 price tag. Let’s take a closer look at the history of this home and what it still has to offer.

The house was built in 1874, according to the real estate company. It is also known as the Collier House but became much more commonly referred to as The Big Fish House after it starred in the 2003 movie.

What was originally a one-story home, the set designers for the movie built a second story for the film. It served as the home for Edward and Sandra Bloom in Tim Burton’s “The Big Fish.”

The movie was filmed completely in Alabama with much of it happening in Wetumpka. While some settings played up to the fantasy genre, the house was very real and is still standing today.

HGTV’s Home Town Takeover

Maybe a bigger reason for the building’s price tag is the renovation that took place a few years ago when HGTV’s Ben and Erin Napier selected it as one of the projects for the Home Town Takeover show in Wetumpka.

The couple helped give a big renovation to the house along with finally finishing what was essentially an incomplete movie set on the second floor of the home. Renovations included:

  • Updated and painted front porch + door
  • Widened foyer and finished staircase
  • Open concept dining room + kitchen w/ island
  • Updated living room with wallpaper from The Big Fish movie
