The state of Alabama has plenty of official symbols from the state flower (Camellia) to the state fruit (blackberry) to the state bird (Yellowhammer).

But there is not an official food dish for the state.

So we wanted to find out what you think the unofficial state food should be. And you delivered.

With 240 comments and counting, we had a wide variety of answers but some of the top answers included:

  • Conecuh sausage
  • Boiled peanuts
  • Fried chicken
  • Fried catfish
  • White BBQ sauce
  • Fried green tomatoes

It’s not a surprise to see any of those at the top of the list but it was clear that conecuh sausage stood out above the rest. The Lower Alabama delicacy with “true Southern flavor” got more than twice as many comments as any other food.

Of course, some people wanted to build an entire day of food and couldn’t settle on just one official state food.

“Biscuits and gravy for breakfast lol, Lunch a good ass pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw and dinner, Fried chicken, Potato salad, sweet tea and for dessert a good apple pie… I know that’s more than what was asked but hey I love food.”

Barbecue was a big part of the comments as well but readers were split on exactly which dish was the best option.

While Alabama white sauce led the way, not everybody agreed its the best way to enjoy BBQ. Other commenters prefer:

  • Pulled pork
  • BBQ potato
  • Ribs

Biscuits and gravy was a popular choice for people who went the breakfast route including a shout out to tomato gravy and chocolate gravy.

Some said it just depends on where you are in Alabama.

“Depends what part of Alabama. Conecuh sausage is statewide. But south Alabama has the fried crab claws. North Alabama has the white barbecue.”

Sock Puppets

And while you can’t go wrong with most of the main entrees listed above, there are some people who believe the sides are what make a meal. Some of the top choices for sides include:

  • Fried okra
  • Cornbread
  • Grits
  • Turnip greens

And what meal would be complete without dessert? Banana pudding got the most votes in that category but other comments include pecan pie, apple pie and a Yellowhammer Cookie which is the official state cookie.
