Which Alabama colleges received the most NIH funds in 2024?

With impending cuts to funding from the National Institute of Health (NIH), several colleges in Alabama are now needing to find a way to replace that funding for different departments + projects.

In 2024, 19 organizations across the state received funding from NIH, totaling more than $380 million.

Here are some of the organizations who earned over $1 million in NIH funds:

  • UAB: 615 grants | $334,417,936
  • University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa: 25 grants | $9,655,823
  • Auburn University: 28 grants | $9,165,784
  • University of South Alabama: 19 grants | $7,455,789
  • Tuskegee University: 6 grants | $6,655,845
  • CFD Research Corporation: 5 grants | $2,379,361
  • Hudson-Alpha Institute: 5 grants | $2,223,012
  • Southern Research Institute: 5 grants | $1,998,902
  • Endomimetics: 2 grants | $1,224,238

2025 NIH Grants

It’s still unclear how cuts from the new administration will impact any university or organization in Alabama.

Some funds have already been issued for 2025. 10 different institutions have received 234 grants totaling roughly $106 million.

Among those grants include $94 million to UAB. Others receiving funds already in 2025 include:

  • Alabama State University
  • Auburn University
  • Hudson-Alpha Institute
  • Tuskegee University
  • University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa
  • UAH
