College basketball season is wrapping up soon while baseball season is officially about to get started but the sport that still rules the south isn’t taking a backseat in the month of April.

If you’re looking for a football fix, college teams across the state will be providing (sometimes free) access to their annual spring scrimmages. Let’s take a closer look at when and where you can get a first look at your favorite teams starting with a packed Saturday this weekend.

Auburn headlines first Saturday in April

The Auburn Tigers will get the second year of the Hugh Freeze era underway this weekend at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Auburn’s spring game is free for current Auburn students but the general public can pay $10 in advance or $12 on game day.

There are a lot of places you could find college football this weekend so let’s take a quick glance at the schedule for schools from across the state.

The events for UAB, Alabama State and Alabama A&M are free and open to the public.

Alabama’s A-Day begins Kalen DeBoer era

The lone spring game in the state on Saturday, April 13 is happening in Tuscaloosa. The media and the public have gotten more access to the team during spring practices than in past seasons under Nick Saban. Now, the fans are buzzing to see it culminate with the annual scrimmage.

Who will be Jalen Milroe’s top offensive weapon? Who is leading the defense? Which freshman or transfer will make the biggest impact in year one?

Or long story short: what can we overreact to the most after seeing just one scrimmage month before the regular season kicks off? Here’s where you can find out:

  • Where: Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa
  • When: 3 PM
  • Watch: ESPN
  • Free admission

The rest of April

Even with Auburn and Alabama in the books, the second half of the month remains busy. And if you make your way to The Plains or to Tuscaloosa, you can use another weekend to go check out one of the other schools in the state.

North Alabama had their spring game in March but here’s a look at some of the other games to look out for. All of them are free.

Troy will be beginning the Gerad Parker era after former coach Jon Sumrall took the Tulane head coaching position after last season. Parker, a former Kentucky wide receiver, is in his first head coaching position after making stops as an assistant at Duke, West Virginia and Notre Dame.
