Your one-stop guide to a historic week at Rickwood Field

The countdown is almost over. Birmingham’s own Rickwood Field is about to host one of the nation’s biggest sporting events of the year.

We’ve got everything you need to know about the week from the big game Thursday night to the many events happening around Birmingham throughout the week.

Here’s a complete rundown of what you need to know for the big week whether you’re attending a game at Rickwood Field or just want to keep up with the action from a distance.

The games

The highlight of the big week will certainly be Major League Baseball’s visit to town as Rickwood Field, the nation’s oldest active professional ballpark, will host an MLB game for the first time ever.

But for some local baseball fans, the bigger game may be happening Tuesday night when the Birmingham Barons and Montgomery Biscuits square off in what is essentially the return of the Rickwood Classic.

All four teams will wear throwback uniforms and go by team names that were once used by their cities in the Negro Leagues. Here’s everything you need to know for both games.

Barnstorm Birmingham

On the night between the two baseball games, several big names will hit the field for a celebrity softball game. The entire list has not yet been revealed but some Alabama natives will be participating including Terrell Owens, Jameis Winston + Roy Wood Jr.

After the game, hip-hop star Metro Boomin will perform a concert at Rickwood Field. The night will also include performances from local HBCU choirs.

If you are lucky enough to be attending the events at Rickwood Field, you will need to drive to Legion Field to park. There will be a shuttle service between the two stadiums.

You will need to show your ticket to enter the parking lot at Legion Field. The shuttle service will begin prior to gates opening on game days and will run until first pitch.

Legion Field parking lots will open one hour prior to public gates opening at Rickwood Field.

What you can bring into the stadium

There will be security gates to go through once you get off the shuttle and walk into the ballpark. You can find a full list of prohibited items on the MLB website.

Personal bags are allowed with some restrictions and will be subject to search. Clear bags no larger than 12″ x 6″ x 12″ are permitted. Purses/clutches no larger than 4.5″ x 6.5″ are permitted.

Things to do outside of Rickwood

The games are not the only thing happening in Birmingham to celebrate the big baseball week.

At the beginning of the week, you can go check out a movie about Birmingham native Willie Mays. A mural to Mays and the games at Rickwood Field is also going up in downtown Birmingham.
