In Alabama, around 32% of physicians are women, compared to 38% nationally. Representation of women in the medical profession helps ensure that healthcare systems reflect and serve the needs of everyone.
To recognize our 32%, we rounded up a few of these healthcare providers across the state.
Why is being a woman in medicine important?

While the number of women in medicine continues to increase, it’s no secret that being a woman in a typically male-dominated field comes with challenges.
As singular as the women themselves, highlighting their role in the medical field allows us to remember that what were once considered non-traditional roles for women are now normalized and celebrated.
Women bring a unique perspective to the medical field

Dr. Ginnie Prater serves as the Medical Director of Member Management at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama. We sat down with Dr. Prater about her 10+ years in the medical field and what it means to her.
“Women bring a unique perspective to anything, and medicine is not an exception. Overall, having more women in medicine helps the field become more human.
We can acknowledge that we have our own needs that we have to attend to, or else we can’t help other people.”
