Two Alabama airports are getting some major renovations, thanks to grant money from the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT). Improvement projects are now in the works at the Shelby County Airport and the H. L. “Sonny” Callahan Airport in Fairhope.

Shelby County Airport in Calera

Amount awarded by ALDOT: $112,500
Amount matched by County: $37,500
Total project cost: $150,000

Improvements at the Shelby County airport include pavement resurfacing to a runway and a taxiway.

H. L. “Sonny” Callahan Airport in Fairhope

Amount awarded by ALDOT: $82,581
Amount matched by city: $4,588
Total project cost: $91,757

In Fairhope, city officials are putting the money toward constructing a new 13,500-square-foot parking lot for the new terminal.

Both airports were awarded funds through ALDOT’s Airport Improvement Funding Program, which helps maintain and operate airports across Alabama. ALDOT estimates $8M in grants will be dispersed to local airports this year.
