Roughly 70 blocks of Selma streets will be repaved and a new parking lot for city’s welcome center will be added as a part of a $2.4 million infrastructure project in the city.

City officials and community leaders announced the plan earlier this year, giving more details on the project which will be funded by grants from the Delta Regional Authority. The city believe the improvements will help:

  • Mitigate flooding
  • Improve road conditions
  • Enhance public safety

Work around the city is expected to begin this month and last roughly 60 days before it’s completed. The work will begin in February and should take about 60 days.

The city said its goal is to start on Water Avenue and have the downtown city center completed by the Bridge Crossing Jubilee.

The project will reportedly start at Water Avenue, go up to Parkman Avenue and then from Church Street back up to Franklin Street and Lawrence Street.

Areas heavily impacted by the January 2023 tornado will also be included.

All of the streets included in the project are expected to get drainage improvements + sink holes will be reinforced. The city will lay down a new surface including striping and bike lanes.
