2 singers + 1 chef: How to watch these Alabamians compete on national TV

From the kitchen to the state, there is a trio of young Alabamians representing the state on national TV and all of them are getting closer to claiming the crown of their competition. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Asher HaVon of Selma, The Voice—Top 12
  • Bryson McGlynn of Opelika, MasterChef Junior—Semifinals
  • Triston Harper of McIntosh, American Idol—Final 7

All three of Alabama natives will be back on screen next week as they continue to compete. Let’s take a look at each of their journeys + how you can watch them going forward.

Asher HaVon, The Voice

If you watched Asher HaVon hit the stage on The Voice during the blind auditions, you probably aren’t surprised to see him still in the competition. As a member of Reba McEntire’s team, HaVon has impressed all of the judges and the rest of the country with every performance.

Here’s a list of what he has sung during the competition so far:

  • “Set Fire to the Rain” by Adele
  • “We Don’t Need Another Hero” by Tina Turner
  • “Un-Break My Heart” by Toni Braxton
  • “Titanium” by David Guetta + Sia

HaVon is used to being on stage. In 2015, he sang at Selma when former president Barack Obama attended the annual event to commemorate the anniversary of Bloody Sunday.

Now, HaVon is one of the final 12 contestants in The Voice and will be back on the stage Monday night. All 12 will sing during Monday night’s show then the public vote will save eight of them. The other four will sing again Tuesday night with an instant vote happening before the end of the show. Here’s what you need to know:

Bryson McGlynn, MasterChef Junior

The 12-year-old chef from Opelika has already built a large following on social media through his “Cookin’ with Cheese Curd” channels. Bryson McGlynn is a sixth grader at Fox Run School and now, he has taken his talents to television, impressing some of the toughest food critics in the world.

“Bryson, if you don’t open a steak restaurant at some point in your life, it’s game over for everybody. But blowing my own mind, the potatoes and steak are not the best part of this dish. Those greens are out of control… It is a really satisfying bite when you get a taste of all three. I liked it a lot.”

McGlynn is now one of the final four contestants competing for the $100,000 grand prize. Two more episodes remain before the winner is announced. Here’s what you need to know about the semifinal show:

  • What: MasterChef Junior semifinals
  • When: 7PM Monday
  • Watch: FOX + next day on Hulu

The episode has already been filmed and McGlynn is back in Opelika where his family is hosting a public watch party for this week’s show. You can join them at Walk-Ons with a Meet and Greet starting at 5:30PM.

Triston Harper, American Idol

Triston Harper certainly doesn’t try to hide his roots, more so embracing them especially when he takes the stage to sing. His story resonated with the American Idol judges and anybody who watched his original audition before he booked his trip to Hollywood.

The McIntosh native was just 15 years old when he auditioned with a Jason Isbell song. And it was clear he would be one of the favorites for every country music fan who watches the show.

Now, Harper is one of the final seven singers on the show. Here’s what he sang to get to this point:

  • “God’s Country” by Blake Shelton
  • “H-O-P-E” by Triston Harper
  • “Til You Can’t” by Cody Johnson

  • “Sand in my Boots” by Morgan Wallen

Harper will return to the stage Sunday for Adele Night where two people will be sent home. Next week is Disney Night before the Grand Finale on May 19.

But before Harper gets there, he’ll have to survive Sunday night. Here’s what you need to know:
