In a surprise move, Whataburger announced they are closing two locations in Tuscaloosa and Auburn on December 15th.

Both hamburger joints are near the campuses of Auburn University and the University of Alabama.

  • Auburn – 101 N. College Street – opened January 3, 2022
  • Tuscaloosa – 1130 University Boulevard – opened August 14, 2023

The Tuscaloosa location on the Strip, blocks away from Bryant-Denny Stadium, received national recognition when it became one of the first Whataburgers that did not display the company’s traditional orange Texas Longhorn-like colors on its storefront. In addition to keeping the peace with college football rivals, the near-campus restaurant was also one of the company’s “first food locker” sites.

Whataburger continues to grow

Despite the two recent closures, Whataburger continues to grow in Alabama. This year, the popular burger joint has opened new locations in Gadsden and Madison.
