3 outdoor ice skating rinks returning to Alabama this holiday season

Get ready to glide through the holidays—outdoor ice skating rinks are returning in Alabama. For a magical way to spend a winter’s day, grab your skates (or rent a pair!) and head to one of these three outdoor ice skating rinks.

1. Skating in the Park—Huntsville

Skating in the Park is back in Huntsville for its 10th anniversary season. According to Skating in the Park’s Facebook, 2021 was a record-breaking season with almost 18,000 skaters.

To celebrate this year’s opening day on Friday, November 18, you can expect fun on the ice, food and a fireworks show beginning at 5:30PM.

There are several special events taking place this season, so be sure to hit the rink on these dates:

  • Skating in the Park Opening Day: Friday, November 18 | 4-10PM
  • First Horizon Family Night: Wednesday, November 30 | 4-9PM
  • McDonald’s DJ Night: Thursday, December 15 | 7-9PM
  • Skating in the Park New Year’s Celebration: Saturday, December 31 | 7-10PM

2. Christmas in Prattville Ice Skating Rink—Prattville

After attracting nearly 10,000 participants during last year’s ice skating event, the City of Prattville has invested in its own ice skating rink to be used annually during the holiday season. This year, the rink opens on Thursday, December 1 in conjunction with the city’s annual Christmas Tree Lighting.

  • Ages 5+ permitted on ice
  • Ages 7 + under need an adult to skate with them
  • Ages 18 + under need parent or legal guardian to sign a skating waiver

When: December 1-31 | Monday-Friday 5-9PM | Saturday-Sunday 1-9PM | Closed Christmas Eve/Day

3. Holidays on the Plaza—Tuscaloosa

Tuscaloosa’s seasonal ice skating rink returns this year on Monday, November 21. Located at Government Plaza in Downtown Tuscaloosa, this outdoor skating rink is the perfect place to glide across the ice with friends and fam.

This festive annual event features:

  • Outdoor ice skating
  • Tinsel Trail benefiting Tuscaloosa’s One Place
  • Private parties
  • Holiday festivities

Know before you go

All skaters must sign a waiver to use the ice rink. Complete the waiver on-site or in advance online.
