$40 million in new building permits for Birmingham data center

Three permits totaling $40 million were issued last week for the Nebius datat center in Birmingham. (Nebius Group)

This past week, 24 new building permits were issued across the state for construction projects exceeding $1 million. These permits included high-dollar projects in Auburn, Cullman, Huntsville, Gadsden and thr Birmingham metro.

Three of these permits were for an AI data center in Birmingham, totaling $40 million.

Three permits were issued to Hoar Construction for a planned 300-megawatt data center to be operated by Nebius Group N.V. of Amsterdam. The center is on the site of the former Regions Lakeshore Operations Center at 201 Milan Parkway in the Oxmoor Corporate Park in Birmingham’s Oxmoor neighborhood.

A demolition permit for the existing building was awarded in January 2026 and permits for the first phases of construction were awarded in April.

The data center is designed to support advanced artificial intelligence workloads and high-performance computing systems. Officials say the center will employ approximately 100 people.
