What if I told you there are ways to hit your New Year’s resolution of working out regularly while having fun?
If a traditional gym hasn’t worked for you before, or if you want to branch out and find new ways to get active in Alabama, we’ve got a few ideas for unique workouts.
1. Boxing
I’ve heard great things about boxing, and I might try this one out for myself in 2025.
At boxing gyms across Alabama, you can get a full-body workout by just hitting a bag—sign me up.
- Auburn-Opelika: Kagefit
- Birmingham + Tuscaloosa: Battle Republic
- Dothan: Wolfpack Karate & MMA
- Huntsville: Rocket City Boxing
- Mobile: Dexter’s Fitness Center

2. Dancing
Whether it’s Jazzercise, Zumba or ballet, you’d be surprised at how great a workout dancing is.
Plenty of Alabama cities offer classes that are perfect for any experience level. Find what fits you best and bust a move this year!
- Auburn: Zumba with Auburn Parks and Recreation
- Birmingham: Jazzercise Riverchase Fitness Center
- Mobile: Sh’bam at Studio Fitness
- Tuscaloosa: Dance & Burn at PARAFit Fitness
3. Spin class
Taking a spin class was one of the most challenging and rewarding workouts I tried in 2024.
Most classes have a thoughtfully curated playlist and allow you to mimic the instructor’s choreography. It’s upbeat, inclusive and so much fun!
- Auburn: purvelo
- Birmingham, Tuscaloosa + Huntsville: THREE15
- Birmingham: Ignite Cycle
- Dothan: Cycology
- Mobile: Mission Fitness
- Muscle Shoals: One Ride Cycle
4. Hiking
One of my personal favorite ways to get active—go on a hike.
Alabama is never short of amazing trails, mountains and views. Prioritize getting outside this year, and your mental and physical health will thank you for it.

5. Swimming
While it’s still too cold to swim outside (yes, even in Alabama), plenty of fitness centers across the state have indoor pools.
- Anniston: Anniston Aquatic & Fitness Center
- Cullman: Cullman Wellness & Aquatic Center
- State-wide: YMCA
Then, when the weather starts to warm up, you can exercise at your local community pool or swimming hole.
