550+ layoffs and closures announced in Alabama in April

In April, six organizations announced a total of 559 layoffs in Alabama—more than the number of announced layoffs in the previous six months combined. Read on to learn more about these layoffs.

More than 500 layoffs announced in Alabama

These announcements are mandatory through the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, which requires employers with 100+ employees to provide advance notice (60 calendar days) of planned closings and mass layoffs.

The six organizations that announced layoffs and closures in Alabama last month are:

  • The Boeing Company — 128 layoffs
    • City: Huntsville
    • Planned layoff start date: 6/28/2024
  • ASM Global — 55 layoffs
    • City: Mobile
    • Planned layoff start date: 5/31/2024
  • Bullock County Hospital — 95 layoffs
    • City: Union Springs
    • Planned layoff start date: 4/9/2024
  • Canfor Southern Pine — 122 layoffs as result of closure
    • City: Jackson
    • Planned closure date: 6/12/2024
  • International Wines and Craft Beers — 52 layofffs
    • City: Alabaster
    • Planned layoff start date: 6/6/2024
  • Birmingham-Southern College — 107 layoffs as result of closure
    • City: Birmingham
    • Planned closure date: 5/25/2024

The largest number of layoffs come from The Boeing Company (128) as well as the closures of Canfor Southern Pine (122) and Birmingham-Southern College (107).

April was the biggest month for layoffs in 2024 so far, dwarfing January (137), February (0) and March’s (100) numbers. In fact, April saw more layoff announcements than the past six months combined (443).
