The Muscle Shoals Sports Complex, a concept introduced to city leaders in 2024, will move forward, despite a recent veto by Mayor Billy Hudson.

The 66-acre, $65 million development is expected to include multi-sport athletic fields and a complex with the ability to host indoor and outdoor events. The outdoor area will also include an amphitheater that is expected to seat around 1,000 people.

$1.5 million already spent on the project

The city plans to build the new sports and entertainment complex at the site of the Muscle Shoals Sportsplex and fairgrounds near the intersection of highways 72 and 43.

However, concerns over the cost of the complex as it relates to the city’s budget caused Hudson to veto a recent resolution pushing the project forward.

Hudson told WHNT that his veto did not mean he is against the project, but “the land was too much for us to pay.” The city has already spent $1.2 million on the project and Hudson said the cost estimates have noticeably increased since the estimates were made two years ago.

The Muscle Shoals City Council voted to overrule the veto this week, and heard concerns from local residents over the cost of the project to taxpayers.

The council said the city is working to acquire 57 more acres of land for the project.
