While the spotlight is often on STEM in the field of education, one Alabama organization is looking to equip students to enter the ever-important construction industry. The Academy of Craft Training, which is already established in Birmingham and Mobile, has expanded into the fast-growing North Alabama area at their new Decatur campus. Here’s what you need to know.

What is the Academy of Craft Training?

The Academy of Craft Training (ACT) partners with State of Alabama schools to allow high school juniors and seniors to learn the ins-and-outs of construction trades by using The National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) curriculum and learning from industry professionals. The fields that they cover include:

  • Building Construction
  • Electrical
  • HVAC
  • Interior + Exterior finishes
  • Welding
  • Plumbing + Pipefitting

Alabama students participating ACT training not only gain valuable skills in preparation for a career in the construction industry, but they also have the opportunity to earn high school credit.

The new North Alabama campus is located in Decatur, and has partnered with high schools all across the region—from Athens City, Cullman City, Cullman County, Morgan County, Lawrence County, Limestone County, Hartselle City and Madison City.

Academy of Craft Training North Alabama’s grand opening

The Academy of Craft Training North Alabama, with a capacity of 250 students, started classes this August. To celebrate, they’re hosting a grand opening, featuring guest speaker Dr. Eric Mackey, Alabama State Superintendent of Education.

“ACT provides students with opportunities to learn the appropriate trades and skills to enter the commercial construction industry immediately following high school. These are high-demand jobs that can be long and productive career paths for our graduates.”
