The Alabama high school football state championships will have a new home in the coming years.

The Super 7 will be played at Hancock-Whitney Stadium in Mobile twice over the next four seasons. That decision came Wednesday during an Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Central Board Meeting.

Protective Stadium in Birmingham will also remain in the rotation. Here’s the schedule going forward:

  • 2025: Protective Stadium
  • 2026: Hancock-Whitney Stadium
  • 2027: Protective Stadium
  • 2028: Hancock-Whitney Stadium

“We are grateful to the cities of Tuscaloosa, Auburn and Opelika, Auburn University, the University of Alabama and their tourism bureaus for taking the Super 7 championships to the next level. We think we now have an outstanding plan in place and look forward to continue working with Birmingham and now Mobile while striving to keep our Super 7 the envy of many other states across the nation.”

After Tuscaloosa and Auburn were removed from the rotation due to the new College Football Playoff format, the AHSAA began discussing a potential new location to be used along with Birmingham.

Rumors swirled over the last few months with cities like Montgomery and Troy joining the conversation but nothing picked up traction quite like Mobile.

“I want to thank all the cities that showed interest in hosting our Super 7 football championships in the coming years,” said Harmon. “All were impressive and could be outstanding venues for our Super 7 event. However, after much study and discussion, we concluded these two cities were our best options at this time. And I especially want to thank our Central Board for their guidance and support.”

Hancock-Whitney Stadium opened in 2020, a year after Protective Stadium. The stadium has had plenty of success in a short time as a hosting venue for events that have included:

  • South Alabama Jaguars football
  • AHSAA’s North/South All-Star Game
  • Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game
  • Reese’s Senior Bowl
  • 68 Ventures Bowl

The $78 million venue has a capacity of 25,450. The facility’s features rival those of Protective Stadium including:

  • 11 Suites
  • 44 Loge Boxes
  • Up to 95 Points of Sale for Concessions
  • Musco LED Lighting (ability to create light show)
  • Daktronics High Definition Videoboard
  • Daktronics High Definition Ribbon Boards and Sound System

Mobile will become the fourth city to host the state championships since the AHSAA created the Super 6, which moved all games to one site.

“Now the real work begins! This event will take our entire community to help ensure the participants and the fans have a memorable experience as it is potentially the largest sporting event ever to be held in southwest Alabama. We in Mobile are looking forward to making it special for everyone involved.”
