Reading time: 2 minutes

Three-day weekends may not come around as often as we’d all like but when they do, you may be looking for a quick road trip to get away.
World Atlas recently recognized 11 Southern towns that make ideal destinations for a three-day weekend. And one Alabama town was included.
Keep reading to learn why the publication selected Oxford + what other cities made the cut.
“Few regions suit a short trip as well as the American South. In its small towns, a walkable main street, a good kitchen, and a mountain or a shoreline sit within a few square blocks, so 72 hours goes a long way.”

Oxford recognized for history + outdoors

Oxford has certainly grown as a destination in recent years, expanding its national reach while still staying true to its small-town charm.
WorldAtlas points to several reasons to visit but specifically emphasizes the natural beauty of the city. The article mentions:
- Cheaha Mountain
- Cheaha State Park
- Choccolocco Park
- Talladega National Forest
- Lake Chinnabee
- Talladega Scenic Drive
These places provide miles of trails through open spaces + shady wooded areas. And you can often find trail signs along the way to learn more about the history of the area.
In town, Oxford has plenty of local food options along with a large selection of the always-popular national chains. You can explore historic downtown or see some of the newer attractions like Big Time Entertainment or the new Bike Park.
