Moving can be hard — switching jobs, finding new schools for your kids, getting acclimated to a new town are not easy — but one region of Alabama wants to entice you to make the move there by offering a monetary incentive.
The Shoals area, a storied part of North Alabama that includes four cities and two counties, is offering $10,000 for qualified workers to move there.
Move to the Shoals
A program called Remote Shoals, started in 2019, offers qualified workers up to $10,000 to move to the region. And the program seems to be working.
As of February 2022, it had received 2,300 applications from all 50 states (as well as several from abroad) with participants coming from 22 different states.
To be considered for the Remote Shoals program, applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- You make $52,000 or more per year.
- You can relocate to the Shoals area within 6 months of being selected.
- You’re employed as a full-time remote employee or self-employed as an independent contractor outside Colbert and Lauderdale counties.
- You’re 18 or older and eligible to work in the United States.
What’s the catch?
If you want to relocate to the Shoals — which includes Florence, Muscle Shoals, Tuscumbia and Sheffield — and collect that $10,000, there are some stipulations.
When you move there, Remote Shoals will give you 25% up front to help with the costs of relocating, then another 25% after your first 6 months in the Shoals, and the remaining 50% when you’ve completed your first year there.
