The popular geography website World Atlas is known for its lists that allow people to explore cities they may not know much about.

Earlier this month, the site named 8 of the most charming small towns to visit in the South. And Dauphin Island, Alabama made their list.

Keep reading to find out why Dauphin Island was chosen + why we think World Atlas is right about you needing to visit.

World Atlas identified Dauphin Island as one of the small Southern towns where time seems to slow down + every interaction feels like embracing an old friend. The site specifically pointed to the town’s wide variety of things to do while visiting including:

  • Local shops + restaurants
  • Art galleries
  • Sandy beaches

“Dauphin Island perfectly represents the southern coast’s charming, laid-back lifestyle.”

The town also provides different opportunities for educational experience.

  • Fort Gaines: Historic landmark from the Civil War
  • Audubon Bird Sanctuary: 164 acres of woodlands with a variety of migrating bird species
  • Alabama Aquarium: exhibits coastal Alabama’s four major habitats

Other cities on the World Atlas list

While World Atlas did not officially put the eight towns in any particular order, we would put Dauphin Island up against any other town on the list.

That being said, if you enjoy trips to Dauphin Island, there’s a pretty good chance you’d enjoy traveling to the other sites recommended by World Atlas.

The Southern region of the United States has graciously earned itself a reputation for its hospitality, warmth, and charm. In particular, eight towns in this friendly region exemplify these traits in the best way possible.”
