What does ‘seasonally adjusted’ unemployment mean?
The Department of Labor describes the seasonal adjustment as a “statistical technique that eliminates the influences of weather, holidays, the opening and closing of schools, and other recurring seasonal events from economic time series. This permits easier observation and analysis of cyclical, trend, and other nonseasonal movements in the data.”
Here is how it changes for the April 2026 report:
- Not adjusted
- AL unemployment rate: 2.6%
- AL unemployed: 60,398
- AL Labor Force Participation: 56.9%
- National unemployment rate: 4.0%
- U.S. Labor Force Participation Rate: 61.7%
- Seasonal adjusted
- AL unemployment rate: 2.8%
- AL unemployed: 67,115
- AL Labor Force Participation: 57.3%
- National unemployment rate: 4.3%
- U.S. Labor Force Participation Rate: 61.8%
Both metrics are used by the Department of Labor to track unemployment.
