Alabama women’s basketball ranked for first time since 1999

For the first time since the turn of the millennium, the Alabama women’s basketball team is ranked in the Associated Press Top 25.

The Crimson Tide comes in at No. 24 in the preseason poll.

Crimson Tide in the Top 25

After making the NCAA tournament in consecutive seasons for the first time in 25 years, the Alabama women’s basketball program is getting some national recognition. Kristy Curry’s team is ranked just inside the top 25, receiving 67 total points in the poll.

Here’s some quick facts about the preseason rankings:

  • 16 of 30 voters ranked the Crimson Tide
  • Alabama ranked as high as 14 by two voters
  • 7th among SEC teams

This is the ninth time Alabama has been ranked in the preseason AP poll. The highest the program has ever been ranked was #2 in 1996.

Defending champion South Carolina received 27 of the 30 first-place votes in the preseason rankings. The Gamecocks are followed by UConn, USC and Texas with UCLA rounding out the top five.

What to watch this season

Success from the last two seasons has certainly fueled some of the excitement around the Crimson Tide but it’s also about who the team has returning for the upcoming season.

  • Karly Weathers

Alabama’s season will begin when it hosts New Orleans at Coleman Coliseum on Nov. 4.
