ASU alumna featured on Lizzo’s Watch Out For The Big Grrrls
Lizzo’s new reality competition show Watch Out For The Big Grrrls premiered on Amazon Prime on March 25, featuring a hometown star. Asia Banks, ASU alumna and proud former member of the school’s Honey Beez dance team, is competing on the show for her chance in the spotlight.
The competition spans eight episodes and features ten full-figured dancers competing to join Lizzo’s group of backup dancers, known as The Big Grrrls. For Banks, it’s the opportunity of a lifetime.
“This is one of my greatest moments. It’s so surreal. I never thought I would dance outside of college. Being in rehearsals, I remind myself I made it! Getting through the audition phase was well worth it. I’m highly blessed.”

Bringing body positivity to all
In addition to some killer dance moves (and incredible outfits), the show highlights the struggles that plus-sized dancers face as they navigate the industry.
Banks is incredibly passionate about providing representation for other plus-sized girls, and is grateful for the platform to do so.
“Always be bold, beautiful and be you! That’s what the Honey Beez taught me. In fact, if I wasn’t fat, I wouldn’t be on this show. If you talk down to yourself about plus size, others will too. So, start the morning right: Praise your body every day.”

ASU alumna does the Honey Beez proud
Dr. James Oliver is ASU’s band director and creator of the Honey Beez, the school’s plus-sized dance team. Founded on the belief that dance is for everyone, he’s thrilled to see Banks soar.
“I am so happy and pleased with Asia having this opportunity…When I gave her the opportunity to be a member of the Honey Beez, she came through. She did so well that she was captain of the team for two years. So, I’m super proud of Asia and what she has accomplished with Lizzo and super proud that she is a former student of Alabama State University and a former Honey Bee.”
