A historic start to the men’s basketball season for the Southeastern Conference continues as several teams have made great first impressions during their non-conference slates.

Five SEC teams are ranked in the top 7 of the latest AP Poll. Three more were ranked in the top 25. That group includes:

  • No. 1 Tennessee
  • No. 2 Auburn
  • No. 4 Kentucky
  • No. 6 Alabama
  • No. 7 Florida
  • No. 12 Texas A&M
  • No. 14 Oklahoma
  • No. 17 Ole Miss

Keep reading to learn more about Auburn’s strong start + why it could be setting up a historic day for the Tigers and the Tide in February.

What’s next for the Tigers?

The Tigers are chasing their first No. 1 ranking since the 2021-22 season when they won 19 straight games in the regular season to rise to the top spot. There’s a chance that could happen before the new year.

Auburn has three more games before starting conference play, including a date with No. 20 Purdue in Birmingham scheduled for a 3:30PM tip off on Saturday, Dec. 21.

But no matter what happens in those games, it’s safe to say Auburn will be entering conference play as one of the favorites to win the SEC.

The Tigers will get five of those seven ranked SEC teams at home during 2025 while hitting the road to play three of them. Alabama is the only currently-ranked SEC team that Auburn gets a home-and-home with this season.

Top 10 matchup?

It may be hard to believe, but there has never been a matchup between the Alabama and Auburn men’s basketball teams when both teams were ranked in the top 10.

The teams are still about two months out from their next meeting on the hardwood but this season may be the best chance we’ve ever had to see a top-10 matchup featured in the “Iron Bowl of Basketball.”

The game has featured at least one top-10 team in 21 different games including six times in the last five seasons.

Here are the two scheduled games:

  • Saturday, Feb. 15: Auburn at Alabama
  • Saturday, March 8: Alabama at Auburn

Both games are already sold out. The meeting on The Plains will wrap up the regular season for both teams.
