Auburn baseball set to host first super regional in program history
Reading time: 3 minutes

The first weekend of the NCAA Baseball Tournament was filled with turmoil for most of the national seeds and several SEC schools.
But Auburn made things look easy. The Tigers went unbeaten in their regional at Plainsman Park, living up to the No. 4 seed standard.
Auburn’s 11-1 win over NC State Sunday night secured a trip to the Super Regional round, marking the team’s first trip to a super regional since 2022. And this time, the Tigers get to stay on the Plains.
“That was a grind for us. Never hosted a super regional before. Pretty excited about that. They fought hard, they were connected. They played a pretty solid three days for us.”
Butch Thompson, Auburn baseball coach

Auburn vs. Coastal Carolina
The Tigers entered the tournament as the No. 4 national seed, tied for the highest seeding in program history. Now, they are the second highest seed remaining after Vanderbilt and Texas both lost in the regional round.
Auburn will host a team that may not sound like much of a threat to those unfamiliar with college baseball but Coastal Carolina is more than your average mid-major.
The Chanticleers are the No. 13 national seed, which means this is just one of possibly four super regionals to feature two seeded teams. Coastal went unbeaten in the Conway Regional and are currently riding a 21-game winning streak, the longest in the nation.
But it’s not just this year. Coastal has made a name for itself in the college baseball world over the last two decades including winning a national championship in 2016.
“We’re down to one team that’s in our way of going back to Omaha. We’ll play the hottest team in college baseball. We’ve got to keep our head down and keep fighting for that consistency.”
Butch Thompson

2025 NCAA Baseball Tournament
While Auburn enjoyed its weekends, some other SEC schools didn’t fare too well.
An NCAA record 13 teams made the tournament from the conference but just two of them—Arkansas and Auburn—have already clinched a spot in the super regionals. Four others could still secure a spot by winning Monday night.
The last five national champions have come from the SEC and it’s been an all-SEC final in three of the last four years.
