Birmingham Zoo recognized as Alabama’s attraction of the year

The Alabama Tourism Department has recognized the Birmingham Zoo as the state’s Attraction of the Year for 2026.
The zoo reportedly welcomed more than half a million visitors in 2025. It was also recently named the Attraction of the Year by the Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Being named Attraction of the Year is a testament to the dedicated staff and supporters who continue to make the Zoo a destination that visitors return to year after year.”

Birmingham Zoo welcomed 85 new animals in 2025
The zoo celebrated its 70th anniversary last year, reinforcing its position as one of Alabama’s premier family attractions. It’s the state’s only zoo accredited through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).
One of the Zoo’s most celebrated accomplishments over the last year was the opening of Wojciechowski Cougar Crossing, home to two rescued cougar cubs and a pair of orphaned bobcats.
Other accomplishments in 2025 included:
- Welcoming 85 new animals
- Expanding educational programming
- Strengthening conservation initiatives
- Enhancing accessibility with KultureCity
