Bundle up, Alabama: Arctic blast expected to begin 2025
Reading time: 3 minutes

There were times during the fall where we thought it may never get cold again. In fact, there have been record-high temperatures across Alabama for the last couple of months.
But those lower temperatures (and some potential snow) may not be as far away as we first thought.
2025 is expected to start off with an arctic blast across the eastern half of the country, including all the way to the Gulf Coast. Keep reading for the latest information (as of Dec. 31) + stay tuned for more forecasts as the weather gets closer.
Arctic blast
Temperatures are expected to fall well below average for early January.
According to ABC 33/40’s James Spann, the first shot of arctic air is expected Monday, Jan. 6. Temperatures are expected to fall into the 30s this weekend with even colder weather following it.

January is historically the coldest month in Alabama but average lows typically sit in the mid 30s. This arctic blast will come with lower temperatures and likely plenty of wind, sending the “feels like” temperature into the teens or maybe even the single digits.
“The coldest air of the season to date and dangerous wind chills are likely across many areas of the Southeast. Below freezing temperatures are possible as far south as the Gulf Coast and much of the Florida Peninsula.”

Will it snow?

It is still too far out to accurately predict snowfall but there are certainly signs that snow could arrive in Alabama at some point.
“Global models show strong signals of a surface low forming in the northern Gulf of Mexico by Thursday or Friday (Jan 9/10). This is when we have some potential for “winter mischief” across parts of the Deep South. Who gets snow? How much will fall? This is still ten days out and it is just too early to answer those questions, but the players are certainly on the field.”

A model from the National Weather Service shows snow and frozen precipitation expected throughout the country including parts of Alabama. As of Dec. 30, the northern third of the state is listed in the “slight risk” of heavy snow between Jan. 7 and Jan. 14.
